Recce Report

For my short film I am going to need multiple different locations.

  • The first location needs to be a dark, small room where the lighting can strictly be controlled for both the beginning and ending shots.

This room was perfect for my key frame's and it was a small room in which the lighting could be easily controlled in, via the lights seen in the photographs above.

Both of the pictures above are taken from the South Korean film Old Boy and show the dark small room with controlled lighting that I am looking for within the shots. The second photograph shows how I expect my key frames to be looking, as I wish to include similar close up shot's that the picture shows. This setting helps build up the atmosphere of the darkness of the movie and also is introducing the character to the audience as they are bonded with the dark nature of the character.

The above three pictures are taken from the South Korean film, A Tale Of Two Sisters, which also uses the location of the small dark rooms with controlled lighting throughout to also build up the tension.
  • The second location needs to be corridors within a school, it needs to have quite a few people walking through so that my characters don't look like they are the only people around.

These corridors seemed perfect for my short film. They are wide enough for my characters to act and for other people to be walking down them at the time. There are multiple different arch ways and spaces and different objects for example plants; which doesn't make the whole scene look boring but if I decided to film at different parts at different sections of the corridors, it would always look quite similar but different too. In these areas there is a lot of natural sunlight coming through the wide windows but also artificial lights too, shown in picture 3, to help brighten up the area and bring the same lighting effect thats in the library. This area gets very busy at break and lunch times, I could use this to my advantage to make the corridors look busier. However, this could also be a disadvantage because it could be too busy too shoot in, making the area unsafe with pushing and possibly getting hurt or damaging the equipment. To control this, I will try and film on a day in which it is not raining meaning a lot of the students will be outside, or during a non-busy time (during lessons or after school).

The above two pictures are taken from the South Korean film, A Tale of Two Sisters. Both of these shots have corridors in and they are used throughout the film to create suspense and almost a frightful location with the lengths. I wish to use locations likewise these corridors, however, I wish the lighting within them to be a lot brighter than this as the main location is within a school and if the corridors are dark like this, it would not fit in well. I also wish the corridors to not be as empty as these are for the same reason as above.

The above screenshots are taken from the South Korean film, Il Mare, and also include this setting with the corridor. This is the sort of corridor's I wish to set my key frames within as I like the bright lighting shining from large windows behind, which I think would suit my key frames well.

  • The third location is at the back of a classroom. It needs to be at a prime time when the room is quite busy. There needs to be places for the students to be able to lean around and talk to one another and places for the characters to sit on their own for certain shots.
This location was perfect for my scene as there is a space to sit from the back of the room (best seen in picture three) and there are plenty of different tables in which people can sit at and they are able to lean and turn around and talk to one another, which I what I wanted for the scene. There are spaces for people to sit on their own too.

The above picture is taken from the South Korean film 100 Days With Mr Arrogant and the main location used within the film is in a school. The above screenshot from the movie shows the location of a classroom where the pupils crowd around each other and talk, the look I want for my key frames.

  • The next location is within a school restaurant/cafeteria. There needs to be a lot of people around so I would need to film at a busy time and be able to have characters able to both stand and sit around and have a chat.
This area seemed a perfect location to shoot as it is a big open space with many tables that the actors and general public can be sitting on and standing around to create the scene and atmosphere I imagined.  There is plenty of space in this area so I can choose where about I want to film on the day. This area gets very busy during break and lunch times, I could use this to my advantage to gain the 'busy' look that I wanted, however this could also be a disadvantage to me as this could mean that there is a lot of pushing around which could be a potential danger to both crew, actors and equipment. To prevent this I would try and visit at a slightly less busy time or would have to be there earlier to start filming before the chaos. The lighting was perfect in this location as again there is a lot of natural light coming through the windows and doors, but also many artificial lights to brighten up the area if a dull day which also provide the 'glow' appearance in the shots.

  • The final location is in a library setting. There needs to be spaces for people to be sitting around the main protagonist and also for her to be seen sitting on her own. There also needs to be a higher level in this location for the character to be able to look up and see her bestfriend and boyfriend above her.

These photos from the location above I found would be perfect for my short film. You can tell that the setting is a library from the amount of bookcases and books surrounding the area. There was plenty of spaces for my characters to sit around on the multiple tables, seen clearly in picture 2. I would have the main protagonist sitting at the table closest to the camera shown in pictures 1&6; this is perfect to show that she is sitting on her own but I can also show all of the people around her too with their different scenarios from this position. In picture 6, the camera was positioned on top of a book shelf, I liked this position and thought that the view from the camera was perfect for my film with showing the seating and also the books below the camera. The part of this location that made it the best though was that from the table I imagined the main protagonist to be sitting at, when the camera was moved upwards, you could easily see the above floor where Eun-Seo and Shi-Woo will be positioned in the shot. This can be seen clearly in pictures 4, 5 & 6.This makes it easy for the camera to be looking up at them both and will almost give the impression that we are seeing it from Ji-Min's point of view; giving the viewer the expression that she would be feeling. The lighting was perfect in this location as behind, in front of and above the camera, there was wide windows which let in a lot of natural sunlight but there was also round lights on the ceiling of the first floor which created a yellow artificial light too; this created a sort of glow to the setting which made it look a lot nicer. The only problem I would have with this setting would be the circular pillars around, this can briefly be seen in picture 2. However I can easily overcome this with carefully positioning the camera when choosing where to shoot and not including this in.

The above screenshot is taken from the South Korean film Il Mare and uses the location of a comic book store. I like this idea of all the bookcases around the set etc. which is a reason I decided to choose a library for my key frames as this is more student friendly as the main setting is within a school. I like the bright and yellow colour grading to the shot from this film.

The above two screen shots are taken from the South Korean film, 100 days with Mr Arrogant and show the most used location within the film, the school. A school setting will also be my most used location within my film and I wish to set some key frames locations out like the ones in the photos above.

All of the locations, except the first one, need to be reasonably well lit so that the characters will be seen at whatever time of day the shoot takes place as it is set during school hours when the lighting would be bright.
